General Overview:
More smartphones shipped than computers in 2011 and in turn mobile UX has risen to a level of importance on par with the desktop. Unlike web experiences, mobile UX is finicky--it's brief, but demands high performance, it's error prone and unapologetic. Good touch interaction patterns are still emerging and only recently being adopted by users. Meanwhile back-end and front-end development is equally in flux. To understand the complexities of these systems, content and service providers require UX architects to document the creation process in way that is readable and useful. Regardless of who these duties belong to, at the end of the day the same methods and practices must be employed.
The half day Mobile User Experience workshop will examine architectures of mobile systems, current UI design patterns, and usability evaluation methods. We will discuss the issues facing native and web implementations including hybrid strategies and responsive design. Also we will look at the tools used to create UX documentation along with other resources for discovering the best way to implement a mobile strategy under a variety of contexts.
In this workshop we'll cover the following:
- Examine architectures of mobile systems
- Current UI design patterns
- Usability evaluation methods
- Discuss the issues facing native and web implementations including hybrid strategies and responsive design
- Look at the tools used to create UX documentation
Luke Miller is the lead Mobile UX Architect for the Wall Street Journal. He holds a MS in Information Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he studied HCI and worked with the RENaissance Computing Institute to employ novel interfaces and that consider the interpretive strategies of user varying demographics. Currently he lives in Brooklyn and is always in the midst of some new crazy project.
